Observe Medical Professionals at Work

Are you interested in a career in health care? Mercy’s Shadow a Health Care Professional Program is a great way to observe and explore health care fields.

As part of our job shadowing program, you will have the opportunity to watch Mercy’s medical staff performing clinical duties as an observer only. You will not do any work or interact with patients.

Shadowing Program Requirements

To participate in job shadowing, you must be at least 16 years old. You may shadow in one select area or multiple areas for a maximum of ninety-six (96) hours per calendar year (January – December). Observations are usually between four to eight hours in length.

All shadow requests are not guaranteed and subject to departmental approval. You must complete a new application each calendar year, as your application on file will expire each December. If, after the initial application, you would like additional shadowing hours in the same calendar year (January – December), please contact Mercy Volunteer Services to obtain department approval via email or by calling (330) 489-1106, option 5, to speak with a staff member.

In addition, you must submit the Student/Intern/Shadow Health Requirement Checklist and appropriate school or medical documentation stating the requirements have been met. These requirements are at your expense. Please refer to the Student Intern/Shadow Health Requirements Checklist for a full explanation of requirements. Please note: the checklist is a tool applicants can use while gathering the required health records. All submitted documents must be official records from a physician’s office or healthcare facility, or official school records.

For long-term shadow experiences, criminal background checks (FBI and BCI) are required in addition to meeting the health requirements. Participants that shadow twenty-four (24) hours or more in a calendar year will need to provide proof of a current (within prior twelve (12) months) BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) and FBI (fingerprinting) background check. Please refer to the Intern or Shadow Background Check Procedure for a full explanation of our background check requirements.
