Mercy Medical Center will host “JustWalk™” Walk With a Doc walking program on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at noon. Walkers will meet at Mercy Medical Center in the Mercy Cancer Center Atrium and enjoy a refreshing and rejuvenating walk with Edward Walsh, M.D., radiation oncologist and medical director of Mercy Cancer Center, and Sarah Grabowski, M.D., radiation oncologist, and other health care professionals. Free blood pressure checks will be available after the walk, and participants will be entered into drawings for free prizes.

Walk With a Doc is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve health and well-being. “This program has had tremendous participation and tremendous success in many other cities around the country,” said David Gormsen, D.O., vice president and chief medical officer at Mercy Medical Center. “I’m very pleased Mercy is offering this exciting and simple program that shows such improved health results for so many people.”

Walsh and Grabowski encourage anyone in the community to join the walk. This is a FREE program and pre-registration is not required. Walks will be held at noon on the third Wednesday of the month. For more information, visit cantonmercy.org/walkwithdoc.

“Walk with a Doc is honored to team up with Mercy Medical Center. By incorporating Walk with a Doc, Mercy is demonstrating an exceptional level of caring and commitment to its community”, said Dr. David Sabgir, founder of Walk with a  Doc.

Why walk? “There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” said Gormsen. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hurs of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

According to the American Heart Association, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can provide these health benefits, as well:

• Improved blood pressure and blood sugar levels

• Help maintain a healthy body weight and lower the risk of obesity

• Enhance mental well-being

• Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
