Strasburg resident, Talena Starn, unit assistant for Mercy Medical Center’s Critical Care Unit (CCU), has been selected as the hospital’s Star Performer employee for the month of November 2019.
Starn has served patients as a nurse’s aide for nearly four years at Mercy and is currently in nursing school. “Being an aide has helped me gain patient experience and knowledge about the nursing field,” she said. “I enjoy interacting with patients and listening to the stories they share with me.”
Alexis Louive, MSN, BSN, RN, clinical manager of Mercy CCU/CVSCU, says Starn is truly a special individual. “Talena is known to spend the extra time with the patients and their specific needs,” Alexis said. “Her positive light shines to peers and patients.” When a homeless patient was in CCU, co-workers noted the compassionate care Starn provided her patient. “She washed and cut mats out of his hair, shaved him, cut his nails, and gave him a bath. Then when he went to surgery, she washed all of his clothes,” one co-worker wrote.
“Working in the critical care unit has made me realize this is where I want to stay after I graduate.” Starn said. “My family, friends and co-workers are all amazing and have encouraged and pushed me to succeed in my schooling and career.
The Star Performer program is the hospital’s employee recognition and rewards program.
