North Canton resident, Alex Camacho, registered nurse on Mercy’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was selected as the hospital’s Star Performer employee for the month of October 2019.
Camacho is known for his excellent nursing skills and the compassion he shows his patients and their family members. A family who nominated Alex said they were at Mercy after their father suffered a heart attack. “Alex really helped when my dad was in (the hospital) with a heart attack. He was filling in on my dad’s floor. He helped keep the atmosphere light and joked with us, which is what we needed. On one account, when I walked out and had a small breakdown in the hallway, he came and comforted me. I’ve never experienced the compassion from someone I didn’t really know. And it meant a lot.”
He began working at Mercy Medical Center in 2010 as a biomed equipment tech and is now a critical care registered nurse in ICU.
“Alex has been a member of the ICU team for over three years, and it has been a pleasure watching him grow in his clinical knowledge and critical thinking skills,” said Laura Miller, MSN, BSN, RN, CCRN, director of Mercy ICU. “He has demonstrated his passion for learning by returning to the classroom in pursuit of his BSN. He focuses on providing excellent care to our patients, as well as supporting the patient’s family. He is a team player, and is always willing to assist his peers.”
Camacho decided to pursue the nursing profession after being involved in situations that were critical to patient care. “The need for a Spanish speaking interpreter gave me exposure to situations where the interaction with patients, nurses and doctors was crucial,” he said. Camacho is frequently seen supporting Mercy at many local community events. His volunteer work also extends overseas with his participationin medical mission trips.
“The medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic that Mercy participates in is one of the most significant professional activities I have taken part of,” Hesaid. “The trip makes a big difference for those in that country, and I am honored to be able to help.”
