Canton, Ohio: Mercy Medical Center volunteer Tom Hoch and the Mercy Senior Friends program recently received the 2012 OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) Volunteer of the Year Award and 2012 OSHIIP Team of the Year Award from the Ohio Department of Insurance. Hoch and Senior Friends were commended for hard work and dedication to helping eligible Ohioans understand their Medicare benefits.
Senior Friends coordinator Terri Gursky says Hoch – who has been part of Mercy’s OSHIIP SHIPMates since 2010 – is one of the program’s most organized volunteers. In 2012, he assisted nearly 600 individuals and helped with the hospital’s monthly Medicare 101 events.
“Tom keeps the office neat and our statistics up-to-date,” she says. “He always has ideas on how to keep things running smoothly and always has a joke on hand. He is the kind of guy you want to work with.”
Gursky and Hoch are both part of the Senior Friends group that received the Team of the Year Award, together with fellow SHIPMates Joan Garner, Patty Ricker and Harry Wall. Last year, they spoke with a total of 2,500 area seniors who were inpatients at Mercy.
Tom Cecconi, Mercy president and CEO, strongly supports the OSHIIP team at Mercy. He says, “Medicare benefits can sometimes seem complex, particularly to those who are new to the program. At Mercy, we want to make it as simple as possible for people to access the care they need at our medical center and the benefits they are entitled to through Medicare.”
