North Canton, Ohio: Mercy Weight Management has opened an OPTIFAST Clinic at Mercy Health Center of North Canton. Developed in 1974 to treat obesity in a healthy and effective way, OPTIFAST is a weight-management program that combines lifestyle education and medical monitoring with a meal replacement plan. Under the medical direction of L. Bruce Hensley, D.O., participants will receive a baseline screening and medical evaluation, weekly weigh-ins and educational group meetings, membership to Mercy Health & Fitness Center, and a calorie-controlled meal replacement plan.

To learn more about the program and sample OPTIFAST products, attend a free informational meeting held at 7:30 p.m. every Monday beginning Jan. 4 at Mercy Health Center of North Canton. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 330-588-4854.

An estimated 30 percent of U.S. adults–over 60 million people–are considered obese. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over 300,000 deaths each year are associated with obesity.

Mercy Medical Center launched a successful OPTIFAST program for its employees in 2009. “Although individual results vary, on average, participants achieve a 52 pound weight loss,” says Kathy Wise, R.D./L.D., L.W.C., health and wellness director at Mercy Medical Center.

Documented results in more than 80 studies nationwide revealed participants experience a 15 percent average decrease in cholesterol, 29 percent average decrease in blood glucose and 10 percent average decrease in blood pressure.

During the program, patients develop the skills needed to maintain long-term weight loss. Studies show that after two years 50 percent of patients maintained more than half their weight loss, and 75 percent maintained medically significant weight loss. For more information, visit
