Mercy To Host Delta Society Workshop For Pet Patrol Teams

Posted on: August 17, 2010

Canton, Ohio: Mercy Medical Center’s Volunteer Services Department is offering a Delta Society Pet Patrol Workshop from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 25 for individuals interested in offering therapeutic pet visitations for hospital patients and visitors. Pet behavioral testing will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 for current pet patrol teams and new teams who complete the workshop. Pre-registration is required.

Pet Patrol teams provide a sense of comfort for patients during hospitalization; promote self-esteem through unconditional love; and provide an outlet for anxiety, stress and depression.

All potential volunteers must complete an application process, which includes a written application, background check, interview, orientation and TB screening. To attend the Delta Society Workshop, or for more information about Mercy Pet Patrol, call 330-489-1182 or email whitney.romine@cantonmercy.org.

A collaborative effort between nursing units, Mercy Volunteer Services and Pet Patrol teams, Mercy began their pet therapy program in 1995 and currently has 20 active teams. “Seeing an animal in a hospital setting is not typical, so when a patient sees one of our Pet Patrol teams, it boosts their spirits,” says Whitney Romine, program coordinator of Mercy Volunteer Services.
