Mercy Stresses Importance of Knowing Signs of Stroke

Posted on: May 7, 2015

If a loved one experienced the signs of a stroke, would you be able to identify them in time to save his or her life?  With a stroke, every minute, every second, counts, and in recognition of National Stroke Month, the Stroke Center at Mercy wants to make sure everyone in the community can identify the signs of a stroke.

Know the Signs

Every 45 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke.  Recognizing the warning signs of a stroke could save your (or a loved one’s) life.  Signs of a stroke may include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body)
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Seeking immediate medical care after the onset of any of these symptoms is vital to survival and the prevention of brain damage.  Depending on the magnitude of the stroke and how quickly you receive treatment, the effects can range from minor weakness of a limb to paralysis on one side of the body or death.  If you or someone you know experiences one or more of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
