North Canton, Ohio: Approximately 75 percent of runners are injured each year. Most of these injures are caused by overuse and training errors. Mercy Sports Medicine is hosting a free Optimal Performance Series to show you how to avoid or effectively manage common running issues through proper training, injury management and nutrition techniques. Educational programs are offered from 6 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday, March 6 – April 24 at Mercy Health Center of North Canton.
Dave Downey, M.S., ATC/LAT, athletic trainer for Mercy Sports Medicine, will kick off the series with a program about Functional Movement Screening on March 6.
“Mercy Sports Medicine uses Functional Movement Screening to identify and address physical limitations and asymmetries that can inhibit running economy and lead to overuse injuries,” Downey says. Screening allows athletic trainers to build an athlete from a solid base of unrestricted movement to his or her highest level of performance. For more information or to register, call Mercy Sports Medicine at 330-966-8920.
Additional topics scheduled for the series include:
– March 13: Training Plan Basics
– March 20: Core & Hip Strength
– March 27: Fueling for the Long Run
– April 3: Hydration & Racing in the Heat
– April 10: New Tools in Deep Tissue Massage
– April 17: Running Mechanics
– April 24: Kinesio Taping
