Canton, Ohio: In January 2010, the Stark County Health Department (SCHD) was awarded an Injury Prevention Grant from the Ohio Department of Health. With this four-year funding opportunity, the SCHD will focus on childhood injury prevention, with an emphasis on sports related injuries.
Mercy Sports Medicine is partnering with SCHD and Safe Kids Stark County to implement free coaches clinics for youth sport leagues. Equipment will also be assessed and policy development–including training and education–will be encouraged by youth leagues.
Mercy Sports Medicine currently offers clinics approved by the Ohio Department of Education for high school coaches. “We see the need to expand these educational clinics to include parents and volunteers coaching youth recreational sports,” says Eldon Jones, director of Mercy Sports Medicine. “Through lectures and hands-on demonstrations, we’ll provide training focused on keeping athletes healthy and in the game,” Jones says.
Mercy Sports Medicine next youth coaches clinic will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 29 at Mercy Medical Center’s Mercy Hall Auditorium. The clinic is free and open to any parent or volunteer who coaches youth recreational sports. To reserve a seat, call the Stark County Health Department at 330-493-9904, extension 282. For more information about the clinic, call Mercy Sports Medicine at 330-966-8920.
