Mercy Spearheads Towel Collection for Salvation Army Canton

Posted on: April 5, 2017

As part of the observance of Lent—a time of year when Christians are called to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—Mercy Medical Center employees collected new towels, undergarments, and socks over the past month for the Salvation Army Canton Citadel Corps’ hot shower program for the area’s homeless. A van-load of donations was delivered to the Salvation Army’s downtown Canton facility yesterday, enabling the organization to offer towels and clean clothes to people using the showers.

Mary Bosyj, RN, patient service coordinator, Mercy Heart Center, and Jennifer Stranger and Cullen Hardman, Mercy marketing representatives, learned about the need earlier this year during the Salvation Army’s monthly Buckeye Health Insurance Medicaid Luncheon, which brings together community resources for those in need. Mercy regularly participates in the luncheon, providing various health screenings and facilitating access to the hospital’s medical home, Mercy Medical Center at St. Paul Square in northeast Canton.

With coordination from Mercy Mission Outreach, employees from Mercy’s nine area health centers challenged their medical center co-workers to see which group could collect more donations. In addition, Stranger and Hardman received donations from Canton Courtyard Marriott, Cintas, Embassy Suites, Fairfield Canton South, Home2Suites, Kent Stark University at Stark, North Canton YMCA, Rent Wear, and Walsh University.

“It was great to see so many Mercy employees, as well as other area employers, donate toward this cause as part of the Lenten season,” says Sr. Carolyn Capuano, vice president of mission and ministry at Mercy. “A special thanks goes to Mary, Jennifer, and Cullen for recognizing the need and letting Mercy know about it. The Salvation Army still requires an industrial washer and dryer for laundering the towels, and we are looking for community assistance in meeting this additional need.”
