Canton, Ohio: Mercy Medical Center recently received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. This initiative helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.
The award recognizes Mercy for implementing specific quality improvement measures for stroke patient treatment, including:
- Rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period
- Aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
Studies show that consistently following Get With The Guidelines–Stroke can reduce patients’ length of stays, 30-day readmission rates and disparity gaps in care.
“At Mercy, we are dedicated to improving the quality of stroke care in the communities we serve,” says Tom Cecconi, Mercy president and CEO. “This award tangibly demonstrates our commitment to our stroke patients based on internationally-respected clinical guidelines.”
Get With The Guidelines–Stroke also helps Mercy’s staff implement prevention measures, such as educating stroke patients in risk-factor management, awareness of stroke warning signs and proper medication usage. Mercy can make customized patient education materials available upon discharge, based on a patient’s individual risk profile. The materials are written in an easy-to-understand format in either English or Spanish.
“We are pleased to recognize Mercy Medical Center for its commitment and dedication to stroke care,” says Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines steering committee and Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Mercy is also an accredited Mission: Lifeline Heart Attack Receiving Center, an initiative sponsored by the American Heart Association and the Society of Chest Pain Centers. In 2014 under Mission: Lifeline, the hospital was designated a Gold Plus Receiving Center. The American College of Cardiology also awarded Mercy Heart Center its 2013 Action Registry Get With the Guidelines Platinum Performance Achievement Award. Earlier this year, the heart center installed a biplane catheterization lab, which enables Mercy to perform brain intervention for stroke patients.
