Mercy Receives American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline Accreditation and Gold Performance Award

Canton, Ohio: Mercy Medical Center has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Heart Attack Receiving Center Accreditation and is one of two in Ohio to receive the Mission: Lifeline Gold Performance Achievement Award.

The accreditation program – sponsored by the American Heart Association and the Society of Chest Pain Centers – recognizes centers that meet or exceed quality of care measures for people experiencing the most severe type of heart attack, ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), in which blood flow is completely blocked to a portion of the heart. Mercy Heart Center underwent numerous on-site reviews by accreditation specialists from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Gold Performance Achievement Award recognizes Mercy Heart Center’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients that effectively improves the survival and care of STEMI patients. This is the second year Mercy Heart Center has received the Mission: Lifeline Gold Performance Achievement Award. To receive this award, hospitals must demonstrate for 24 consecutive months that at least 85 percent of eligible STEMI patients (without contraindications) are treated within specific time frames upon entering the hospital and discharged following the American Heart Association’s recommended treatment guidelines.

”The American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Heart Attack Receiving Center Accreditation and Gold Performance Achievement Award highlight our commitment to provide our patients the highest quality cardiac care close to home,” says Ahmed Sabe, M.D., medical director of Mercy Heart Center and co-director of Mercy Emergency Chest Pain Center. “It’s the result of nearly 16 years of pioneering rapid, proven chest pain triage combined with the ground-breaking installation of the nation’s first fixed, state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab in an emergency department,” he says.

Every year, almost 250,000 people experience STEMI – the deadliest type of heart attack. Unfortunately, a significant number don’t receive prompt reperfusion therapy, which is critical in restoring blood flow. American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline seeks to save lives by closing the gaps that separate STEMI patients from timely access to appropriate treatments. Mission: Lifeline focuses on improving the system of care for these patients and at the same time improving care for all heart attack patients.
