Mercy Medical Experience Gives Community Leaders Inside View of Healthcare

Posted on: February 24, 2015

Mercy Medical Center recently hosted its fifth Mercy Medical Experience Day to give select community members the opportunity to shadow hospital physicians. Community leaders spent an entire day, one-on-one, with a Mercy physician to gain a greater understanding of the unique culture of Mercy Medical Center and its role in the community, challenges facing healthcare providers, human concerns of medicine, and financial climate of healthcare delivery.

“This experience gives active community participants an insider’s view of the rewards and challenges of providing medical care at the local level,” said Thomas F. Turner, President of the Mercy Development Foundation.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Engels, director of sales and marketing, rp+m, shadowed Mercy Cardiovascular Institute physician Rabia Arshad, M.D. “It was truly amazing and I feel blessed to have been a part,” said Engels. ”I am wiser about my heart and even more amazed by the wonderful work that is happening at Mercy Medical Center and the Cardiac Care Center in particular,” she added.

In addition to Engels, the 2015 class of community participants included Maureen Ater, general manager, The Independent; Richard Croasdaile, retired executive, Merrill Lynch; Derek Gordon, director, Canton City Parks; Jennifer Kiko, field representative, U.S.Congressman Bob Gibbs; Wendy Lichtenwalter, retired educator, Canton City Schools; Robert Mahoney, retired chairman of the board, Diebold Company; Kimberly Mason, trust advisor/vice president, PNC Bank; Ryan McMichael, chiropractor, McMichael Chiropractic Health & Wellness; Brian Mertes, attorney, Black, McCuskey, Souers, Arbaugh Law Firm; Nick Morris, education outreach coordinator, Stark Parks, Quinn Parker, insurance associate, GDK & Company; John Prelac, attorney, Day Ketterer, LTD; and Kathleen Stonemen, attorney, Stoneman Law Office.

In addition to Arshad, Mercy Medical Center physician participants included Albert Domingo, M.S., M.D., Edward Walsh, M.D., Sarah Grabowski, M.D., Steven Ochs, M.D., Ahmed Sabe, M.D., Essam Ragheb, M.D., Anthony Johnson, D.D.S., Gregory Boone, M.D., Martin Johns, M.D., Michael Tirmonia, D.O., Dilip Patel, M.D., Ryan Drake, D.O., Frank Kaeberlein, M.D., Mohan Rajaratnam, M.D.,  David Heiser, M.D., and Sara Vance, M.D.

Mercy Medical Experience began in 2007 and is based on a model developed by the American Medical Association to give community leaders a personal look at the changing dynamics of healthcare at the local level. Active, civic-minded community members are nominated to participate in the program and must commit to an orientation dinner, day-long shadowing experience and debriefing session.
