Mercy Medical Center employee and Plain Township resident Chris Christian says nearly all his family has been touched by cancer. That’s why on September 9 he will embark on a 1,851 kilometer solo bike trek to raise awareness and money for Mercy Cancer Center. His journey begins in Bergamo, Italy, travels through France, and ends on September 23 in Milano, Italy. The distance Christian has chosen to ride has significance because it honors the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, who left Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France, on September 24, 1851, to care for the people of northeast Ohio and eventually open the doors of Mercy Hospital on September 24, 1908.
“The staff, physicians and patients of Mercy Cancer Center are so proud of Chris and grateful for his recognition and support of cancer patients,” says Karen Coughlin, R.N., MSN, administrative director of Mercy Cancer Center. “We encourage everyone to follow his blogs during the journey and keep him in their prayers for a safe return.”
To prepare for this journey, Christian has cycled nearly 5,000 miles on his Fuji Gran Fondo since January of this year. Christian speaks fluent Italian and lived in Naples, Sicily and Sardinia, Italy, for 12 years. To follow his journey and make a donation, visit cantonmercy.org/tourdemercy.
