Mercy Is First in Stark County to Use New SYNERGY Stent

Posted on: April 15, 2016

Canton, Ohio: Dilip Patel, MD, an interventional cardiologist with Mercy Cardiovascular Institute (MCI), recently became the first in Stark County to treat a patient with the newly approved SYNERGY™ Everolimus-Eluting Platinum Chromium Coronary Stent from Boston Scientific.

Stents are tiny mesh tubes doctors use to prop open clogged arteries, allowing blood to flow freely to the heart. The SYNERGY Stent, with its bioabsorbable polymer, offers simultaneous drug and polymer absorption. Designed for faster healing, the SYNERGY Stent provides medication that inhibits coronary blockages from recurring while eliminating permanent polymer exposure, which has been associated with complications such as vessel renarrowing and blood clots.

“Bringing the most advanced medical technologies to our community directly supports our mission to provide outstanding patient care,” said Ahmed Sabe, MD, medical director, MCI. “Early adoption of the SYNERGY Stent, the first and only bioabsorbable polymer drug eluting stent in the U.S., reinforces our commitment to deliver advanced treatment to our patients.”

“We are pleased to be working closely with Dr. Patel and Dr. Sabe at Mercy Medical Center to ensure patients can access this innovative technology,” said Kevin Ballinger, President, Interventional Cardiology, Boston Scientific. “In development for more than 10 years, the SYNERGY Stent reflects our commitment to bringing meaningful change to interventional cardiologists with the most complete portfolio of clinical solutions to best treat their patients.” said Ballinger.

The SYNERGY Stent is being studied in more than 15,000 patients worldwide and has documented outstanding safety and efficacy of the Bioabsorbable Polymer Everoliumus Eluting Platinum Chromium Stent.  For images and video showing the SYNERGY stents unique properties please click here.
