According to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Web site, stress is a reaction to physical, chemical, emotional or environmental factors that varies from person to person. In stressful situations, the body releases the hormone adrenaline, which causes an increase in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.

Although researchers are unsure if stress by itself increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, it may affect other risk factors and behaviors, including high blood pressure, smoking, physical inactivity and overeating. To learn more, visit, keyword stress.
