For the second year in a row, Mercy Heart Center has partnered with the American Heart Association to serve as the 2014 local cause partner for the Go Red For Women initiative. Go Red for Women was created 11 years ago (six years locally) to fight the heart disease in women through education and research. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, and claims more female lives than all forms of cancer combined.
“This partnership signifies Mercy Medical Center’s dedication to an epidemic that kills one in three women . . . heart disease,” says Thomas E. Cecconi, President and CEO of Mercy Medical Center, “This sponsorship of the Go Red for Women initiative is a reflection of our hospital’s mission to be responsive to the needs of our community, and to educate our mothers, wives and sisters.”
Through this partnership, Mercy Heart Center will be offering many educational programs and events to the community during February (American Heart Month) and throughout 2014. Below are a few of the programs that Mercy will be offering to the community during February:
• Red Hot Zumbathon: Saturday, February 1st, 2-4pm inside Mercy Hall Auditorium, 1320 Mercy Drive NW, Canton. A $10 donation is suggested with all proceeds benefitting the American Heart Association. Join us for a Latin-inspired, calorie-burning Zumba event, while raising money for the Go Red For Women initiative. Call 1-800-223-8662 to register.
• Sisters in Red: African American Women and Heart Disease – Saturday, February 8th at Meyer’s Lake Ballroom, 3218 Parkway St., NW, Canton – doors open at 11:00am. This FREE community program features a sit-down lunch and presentation by Mercy Cardiovascular Institute cardiologists: Rabia Arshad, M.D. and Simonette Jones, M.D. Call 1-800-223-8662 to register.
• Low-Cost Community Blood Screenings: These are held each Friday of the month at different Mercy Health Centers around the community. Total Cholesterol is only $2, glucose is just $2 and a complete lipid profile is $8. NO appointment needed, NO prescription required and NO insurance necessary. Just walk-in during designated times.
