North Canton, Ohio: Mercy Health & Fitness Center, located at 6200 Whipple Ave., NW, offers classes for adults of all fitness levels and ages. Extending the benefits of physical fitness to non-traditional exercisers–including people with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, pulmonary disease and other chronic conditions–the center’s experienced staff offers a variety of exercise classes. • Pilates classes will be held from 7–8 p.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 6–27. The cost for the session (four classes) is $20 for members and $28 for non-members. Pilates focuses on core training designed to strengthen abdominal muscles, back muscles, hip joints and buttocks. Pilates also improves flexibility, balance, coordination, posture and body mechanics.
• Yoga classes will be held from 9–10:15 a.m. on Saturdays from Jan. 9–30. The cost for the session (four classes) is $40. Yoga is based on the belief that the body and breath are intimately connected with the mind. Gentle yoga postures, breathing exercises, guided imagery and deep relaxation are all part of the class.
• SilverSneakers®Muscular Strength & Range of Motion classes will be held from 9–9:50 a.m. and then again from 10–10:50 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays. The class is free and ongoing for members and $20 for non-members. Using handheld weights, elastic tubing with handles, resistance balls and chairs for seated and/or standing support, participants–age 55 years of age and older–will increase strength, range of motion, flexibility and balance.
• Dance for Fitness is a new class to be held from 10–11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Jan. 5–26. The cost is $40 for the session (four classes). Incorporating different styles of dance, instructor Jack Wadsworth will teach a variety of steps while helping you increase your fitness level. Wadsworth has studied tap, jazz and ballet in New York and Chicago and has taught dance for over 30 years.
