Canton resident, Fonda Mercer, patient access representative for Mercy Physical Therapy, has been selected as the hospital’s most recent Star Performer employee.
Mercer was nominated for her persistence for four months to obtain insurance authorization on behalf of one patient who was denied therapy after a surgical procedure.
“Fonda is willing to do anything for Mercy, putting the patient and department needs over her own,” said Dax Dipold, manager of Mercy Physical Therapy. “For her to work for months to get a patient authorization for treatment shows the extent of what she will do. And it is not just the patients, she offers the same service excellence to co-workers and other healthcare teammates who need assistance.”
At 18 years old, Mercer started her first job at Timken Mercy Hospital in outpatient registration. In 2015, she came back to Mercy and says she plans to stay until retirement.
“I chose the medical profession because I love to take care of people in any way,” Mercer said. “I knew I could not be a nurse or a doctor so the next best thing was to be able to help in other ways by doing what I do best in the front office and insurance area.”
Mercer says that in addition to great co-workers, what she enjoys most at Mercy is meeting people. “To know that I am the first impression and representation of Mercy makes me feel proud. I want to make that patient feel welcome, at ease, and most of all, feel like they are in the right spot for the best patient care.”
Greater than any awards she’s received, Mercer says that she is most proud of being a mother to her beautiful daughter. “I am a single parent of 17 years, and I was raised by a single parent, which comes with sacrifice, struggles, love, patience, and most of all, hard work. I teach my daughter to have a strong work ethic and a heart of gold, because with those two things, no matter the salary, the payoff is the best.
The Star Performer program is the hospital’s employee recognition and rewards program.
