Cancer Survivor’s Cruisin for Cancer Fundraising Event Benefits Cancer Patients

Posted on: August 6, 2015

Cancer survivor Rhonda Griffin and her husband Perry are founders and organizers of Cruisin for Cancer, an annual fundraiser that has raised over $39,073 the last six years for Mercy Cancer Center and Mercy Breast Care Center. This total includes $3,561 in contributions from Stark County Sheriff’s Community Outreach Program, under the direction of Chris Barker, in 2014 and 2015.

This year’s event was held Saturday, July 25 in Metzger Park, Louisville, and featured a wonderful showing of cars, trucks and motorcycles, as well as a bake sale, craft show, raffles and entertainment. Mercy Cancer Center staff attended the event to raise awareness about cancer prevention and wellness. Mercy’s mobile mammography unit was onsite for guests to tour, and Mercy Heart Center staff offered free blood pressure checks and provided heart wellness education. The donations from Cruisin for Cancer are placed in the Mercy Cancer Center Development Fund and have assisted uninsured cancer patients with basic necessities, such as transportation to treatments and wigs, prosthetics and mastectomy products.

Rhonda Griffin, executive director of the Louisville Area Chamber of Commerce, was treated for breast cancer at Mercy and has been cancer free for six years. She and her husband Perry began this annual event in 2010 as a way to give back to Mercy for the wonderful care she received as a patient.

‘’When I came to Mercy for breast cancer treatment in 2009, I was fortunate because I had health insurance that paid for almost everything,” Rhonda says. “But I talked with many other patients who had next to nothing. Several told me they would not have been able to pay for care or even get to treatment if it wasn’t for the special programs Mercy offered. My experience as a cancer patient opened my eyes to those needs, and I wanted to give back to support those programs.”

“Rhonda and Perry are special people and wonderful ambassadors for Mercy Cancer Center,” says Karen Coughlin, RN, MSN, administrative director of Mercy Cancer Center. “We are extremely grateful for the outstanding support from this event.”
