Canton, Ohio: In recognition of Mercy Medical Center’s commitment to employee health through comprehensive worksite health promotion and wellness programs, the Ohio Department of Health’s Healthy Ohio Business Council has awarded the hospital a 2014 Silver Healthy Ohio – Health Worksite Award. Mercy has garnered this award six times at either a bronze or silver level.

Kathy Wise, RD, LD, CWC, CWP, Mercy’s director of health and wellness, believes it’s the hospital’s responsibility to demonstrate leadership in the area of employee health.

“As a major provider of health care services for Stark and surrounding counties, we must set an example for the community, as well as show genuine concern for the well-being of all who work here,” she says. “This award acknowledges Mercy’s long-term and ongoing efforts to facilitate and encourage employee health, to enhance productivity and to ensure a healthy work environment for all employees.”

Mercy’s employee-health model incorporates social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual and physical wellness. Initiatives include:

  • Diabetes self-management education program, which includes an opportunity to receive free diabetic supplies
  • On-site tobacco cessation program, weight management, fitness center, fitness classes and monthly blood-pressure screenings
  • Cafeteria’s wide range of healthy options with nutrition labeling and frequent addition of new items

Wise will accept the award on Mercy’s behalf in January at the Health Action Council’s annual conference in Columbus. To learn more about Mercy, visit our About Us page.
