FREE Oral Cancer Screenings
Mercy Cancer Center is offering free oral cancer screenings to promote prevention and early detection of the disease.
Oral cancer screenings will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12th inside Mercy Dental Services (on the second floor of the Surgery Center/Cancer Center building). Mercy dental professionals will perform the exam and may use the VELscope system to help visualize abnormalities in high-risk patients. VELscope is an FDA approved non-invasive, hand-held device that uses fluorescence visualization technology to enhance the contrast between normal and abnormal tissue.
Oral cancer starts in the mouth (oral cavity), and oropharyngeal cancer develops in the throat. Over 25,000 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year. The most common symptom is a sore in the mouth that does not heal. Pain in the mouth that does not go away is another common symptom. Early detection improves chances for successful treatment and saves lives.
Oral cancer screenings are free, but registration is required. To register, call Mercy’s Healthcare Connection at 330-489-1333 or 800-223-8662.
