As part of our partnership with Plain Local Schools and sponsorship of the Oakwood Middle School STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) unit on concussions, Mercy Health Center of Jackson Township hosted nearly 150 seventh-grade students from Oakwood yesterday.
Students toured the MRI and CT imaging area and therapy services, viewed brain scans, and watched a short movie on recent discoveries about the impact of concussions on younger athletes. Mercy staff members from radiology and sports medicine shared their expertise with students and answered many questions.
Eldon Jones, director of Mercy Sports Medicine, had the opportunity to observe the interaction between students and staff. He says, “I was very impressed by the types of questions the kids asked. They are clearly engaged in the subject and learning quickly.”
This has been a great project so far, and we still have much to contribute. The learning unit also includes classroom instruction from Dr. Hudak and Eldon Jones, as well as a Mercy-sponsored design contest that will help place important information about concussions into the hands of all Plain Local third graders and their families.
