"The most valuable experience of volunteering for me would be the memories I have made with all the friends I have met." — Carol Wilson, Mercy Senior Friends volunteer

Carol Wilson’s eyes light up whenever she talks about volunteering with Mercy Senior Friends and Mercy Medical Records. She has given more than 1,100 hours of volunteer service to Mercy Medical Center.

“I love working with the staff; they are all so nice," she says. What she loves most about volunteering is “seeing all the regulars,” referring to the other members of Mercy Senior Friends whom she has become close friends with.

Carol was first referred to volunteering in 2009 with Mercy Senior Friends by friend and neighbor, Linda Goulden, also a member and volunteer. After meeting Terri Gursky, Mercy Medicare Education specialist and Senior Friends coordinator, Carol decided to take her membership to the next level and became a volunteer.

As a volunteer, Carol helps with a variety of tasks, including answering phones, helping out in the office, visiting other members who were patients in the hospital, or spending time with other members at fun outings.

Her favorite outings were the “deck parties," previously held on the top of the Mercy Surgery Center parking deck. Members would bring their own chairs for a lively cookout with fun, fellowship, food, games and prizes.

“I believe the most valuable experience of volunteering for me would be the memories I have made with all the friends I have met,” she says.

Due to construction and changes at the hospital, this venue is no longer available, but she appreciates that the spirit of camaraderie continues on in new ways, including the popular Lunch & Learn events. She greatly enjoys serving lunch to the attendees of these events.

Carol recently went back to work part time but has found ways to continue to volunteer, despite a busy schedule. She also has two children and three grandchildren whom she loves and is very proud of.
