DON’T LET JOINT PAIN SLOW YOU DOWN:
UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES AND TREATMENT OPTIONS
Your joints are involved in almost every activity you do. Simple movements such as reaching, walking, bending, and turning require the use of your shoulder, hip and knee joints. Normally, all parts of these joints work together and the joint moves easily and without pain. But when the joint becomes diseased or injured, the resulting pain can severely limit your ability to move and work.
A Leader in the Care and Replacement of Joints
At Mercy Medical Center, we follow a holistic approach to treatment reflected daily through our mission statement, “ to continue Christ’s healing ministry by providing quality, compassionate, affordable care for the whole person.” We believe that access to health care is a right for all, not a privilege for some.
Mercy Medical Center surgeons and staff have worked closely to develop a joint replacement program that will shorten hospital stays, improve the quality of orthopedic care, and make your recovery easier.
Every patient is assessed and cared for by a multi-disciplinary team that provides coordinated care, from pre-surgical patient education through specialized peri-operative surgery teams to comprehensive post-acute rehabilitation services. We are here to ensure that you and your family have the information, care, and support they need every step of the way.
At Mercy Orthopedic Center, we maintain surgical outcome rates that are among the best in the country. Quality is reflected in our low orthopedic infection rates, our patients’ short length of stay in the hospital and very low rates of complications compared to national averages. In addition, our surgeons have been at the forefront of many advances in orthopedic specialties, including hip resurfacing, minimal incision surgery, computer- assisted design and surgical navigation, and gender-specific knee technology.
Surgery is performed in our new surgery/ambulatory care facility that includes 15 state-of-the-art operating rooms. For your convenience, all post-operative orthopedic services are fully integrated on one patient-care floor.
Getting Moving Again
It may come as a surprise to you that total joint replacement patients are encouraged to get up and start moving around as soon as possible after surgery. Physical and Occupational therapy is a key part of recovery. When you are medically able, the therapists will instruct you on how to get going again. Our team will work with you to control your pain throughout the program. In addition, the therapists will discuss plans for rehabilitation following hospital discharge. Depending on your limitations, an occupational therapist may provide instruction on how to use certain devices that assist in performing daily activities, such as putting on socks, reaching for household items, and bathing. A case manager will discuss Our Comprehensive Services plans for your return home and will ensure that you have all the necessary help to support a successful recovery.
