Are you having trouble losing weight? Your morning cup of Joe could be to blame.
If you are like most Americans, your day does not start until you get your hands on that first cup of coffee. If you are trying to lose weight, however, your caffeine habits could be actually causing destruction to your weight loss goals. It is not just the high calorie sugar filled drinks from your local café that may cause damage to your diet, though if you are trying to lose weight those drinks should be one of the first to go! Caffeine on its own may be affecting your waistline.
Drinking coffee in the morning can affect certain chemical processes that your body undergoes daily, processes that directly affect your relationship with food.
First, caffeine consumption elevates the stress hormone cortisol, which increases your heart rate and blood pressure while telling your body to increase its stored energy, or calories. The result is that familiar panging for sweets in the afternoon. When the temptation gets the best of us, these sweet snack moments can really add up, and there is a large chance that your morning coffee is to blame for them appearing at all!
Secondly, caffeine consumption can trigger hypoglycemia, which causes your body the inability to function due to overall weakness and requires you to eat. This feeling could cause you to eat when you would otherwise not be hungry, which could lead to a daily consumption of extra calories. Caffeine also is known to increase your stress level and build added insulin resistance in your blood, which affects your blood sugar and appetite control.
If you are trying to lose weight but are having trouble staying full throughout the day, it may be time to start decreasing your daily caffeine intake.
