5 Simple Changes to Help You Lose Weight

Posted on: April 25, 2014

Making the decision to lose weight is a big first step towards a healthier life. Instead of approaching your weight loss as a temporary diet that will be over when you reach your goal, make simple lifestyle changes that will last a lifetime and help you to live a happier and healthier life long-term.

Here are 5 simple changes you can make in your life to start living healthier while you lose weight, and keep the weight off for good!

#1 — Smaller portions

While there are certain foods that you are going to want to start cutting out of your diet, the first step is to reduce the amount of food that you are taking in every day. Instead of having three portions at dinner, limit yourself to one. If you have trouble staring at an empty plate try using a smaller plate and filling it to the brim!

#2 — Walk more

There are a lot of occasions during the day where we can walk to complete an errand, but instead we chose to drive. If you are lucky enough to live close to work or to the grocery store start walking or biking instead of driving. If not, try combining all of your errands into one trip and park at the back of the parking lot and walk from store to store.

#3 — Move around

There are a lot of different ways to relax, and they are not all sedentary. Instead of relaxing by watching television after a long day at work, try going to the gym or take your dog for a walk.

#4 — Change the menu

Certain foods are going to help you meet your weight loss goals more than others. For example, snacking on dried fruit and granola instead of potato chips after lunch will save you a bunch of calories, and the fiber content of the granola will help fill you up, unlike chips that often cause you to crave even more.

#5 — Increase physical activity

While running and weight training are outstanding forms of exercise that you should incorporate into your weekly workout routine, they may not be practical everyday—especially when you have a family to take care of. Instead of going to the gym alone, try playing a sport in the backyard with your kids. Being more active in general will help you to burn more calories without feeling like you are working out.
