Tour de Mercy 2014 | Sanctuary di Oropa in ItalyAfter a lengthy transatlantic flight, Chris Christian arrived safely in Italy on September 7. But, instead of resting as planned, here's what he did:

I got here early Sunday morning and was feeling pretty good. So, I went ahead and began biking from Bergamo to Biella today. I also climbed an incredible mountain in the Alps and took photos of Sanctuary di Oropafounded in the 4th century (1162 AD) by St. Eusebio, the first bishop of Vercelli. I biked a total of 158 kilometers.

On Monday I was planning to rest, but I decided to cycle with an Italian rider I met.

My GPS is not working on either phone I brought, so this is going to be interesting. But not to worry. They didn't have GPS years ago, so I'll figure it out. I feel great! No jet lag, but I was just really really tired after not sleeping for two days.

Enjoy the first photos from Chris's biking journey! He says, "If I look beat in the photo, it's because I was really beat after a 158-kilometre ride and then a mountain climb to reach the Sanctuary." Since his first update, Chris has biked more than 200 kilometres!

Cancer Tip #1

Chris Christian knows that healthy lungs mean he can cycle with greater ease. Avoiding tobacco, though, does more than make exercising easier. Smoking increases your risk for numerous cancers, including cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, cervix, bladder and kidney. Mercy Cancer Center offers information on smoking cessation and other cancer prevention information. Call us at 1-888-293-4673 for more information.
