Timely Response to CDI Queries

Many of you make an effort to answer your Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) queries in a timely manner, and your efforts are greatly appreciated. The CDI staff would appreciate it if everyone made this a priority, as it is an important part of your clinical documentation responsibilities.

Most queries will occur on inpatients, and it is easiest to answer those while the patient is still in the hospital, the clinical details are fresh in your mind, and the entire chart is easily accessible for review and for any modifications to the progress notes that might be necessary.

Occasionally queries are needed on a patient who has already been discharged. In that case, it is important to include any information related to a query response in your discharge summary (including as an addendum if the discharge summary had already been completed).  

One way to make it faster and easier to respond to your queries is to sign up to do them electronically. Once you are registered, you will receive an email notification when you have been issued a CDI query. This email notification then gives you a link to access it via the Chartwise system. You can then answer your query electronically, either while at Mercy or at your home or office. Everyone is strongly encouraged to consider doing their queries in this manner. It only takes a few minutes to sign up and can be done by calling Gina Lewis, Senior Clinical Documentation Specialist, at extension 5857.
