A ‘Well-Baby Checkup’ for Your Child’s Teeth

Think of the Age 1 Dental Exam as an important “well-baby checkup.” It’s a positive way for your child and a pediatric or family dentist to meet one another — before any problems may arise.

Your child should have this exam by his or her first birthday. If you don’t have a family dentist, this is the perfect opportunity to find one! Mercy Dental Services can help. For more information, call us or request an Age 1 Dental Exam online.

What Happens During the Age 1 Dental Exam?

During this quick, painless visit with your dentist, you will remain with your child at all times. In fact, he or she will probably sit on your lap for the whole exam.

The dentist will:

  • Check your baby’s mouth, teeth and gums for signs of tooth decay or other problems
  • Talk with you, show you how to clean your baby’s teeth and answer any questions you may have
  • Evaluate habits like thumbsucking

But don’t stop there! You and your child should visit the dentist at least once every year. Make sure you schedule appointments for preventive treatment on a regular basis.
