LightStrike™ Germ-Zapping Robots™ destroy hard-to-kill bugs in hard-to-clean places

In 2018, Mercy became the first and only health-care facility in Stark County to implement the Xenex LightStrike Germ-Zapping Robots and a LightStrike Disinfection Pod to destroy pathogens and bacteria—including hard-to-kill germs, multi-drug resistant organisms, and superbugs—on hospital surfaces that can cause hospital-acquired infections.

Quickly destroys even the most dangerous pathogens

Mercy’s two germ-zapping robots use Full Spectrum™ pulsed xenon ultraviolet (UVC) germicidal light (not mercury bulbs) to penetrate the cell wall of microorganisms, even in shadowed light, quickly destroying bacteria, viruses, fungi, and bacterial spores without chemical residue or fumes. This portable disinfection system safely emits rays more intense than sunlight and is effective against even the most dangerous pathogens, such as:

  • Clostridium difficile (C. diff), which can live on surfaces for four to six months and is particularly hard to remove
  • Norovirus
  • Influenza
  • Ebola
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

The LightStrike Disinfection Pod, a portable disinfection containment unit, can rapidly disinfect high-touch mobile equipment like wheelchairs, computer workstations, and IV poles.

Can be used in any health-care setting

In most cases, the robots can disinfect a patient or procedure room in 10-15 minutes and can be used in any health-care setting. At Mercy, the germ-zapping robots will be used primarily to disinfect the intensive care unit (ICU), 5 Main, operating rooms, cardiac surgery, and cardiac catheterization labs.

Hundreds of hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, and long-term acute care facilities in the United States, Canada, Africa, the United Kingdom, and Europe use germ-zapping robots. Studies show the robots can reduce infection rates by more than 70 percent.
