Mercy Seeks Heart Failure Patients For 'Dance For Life' Pilot
Program Intended to Improve Quality of Life, Exercise Endurance for Heart Failure Patients

Canton, Ohio: The Mercy Medical Center Heart Center is seeking individuals with heart failure for a new research trial called Dance for Life. This free pilot program is designed to improve the quality of life and exercise endurance of heart failure patients.

Dance experience is not required. A professional dance instructor will guide participants while their vital signs are monitored by registered nurses and an exercise physiologist.

Candidates for Dance for Life must:

·          Be age 18 or older.
·          Have NYHA Class II or III heart failure, an ejection fraction of 40 percent or lower, and systolic heart failure.
·          Be willing and able to dance three minutes fast and five minutes slow (alternating) for 21 minutes, three times per week.
·          Not be participating in another exercise program at regular intervals more than once per week.
·          Not have uncontrolled diabetes, be on a cardiac transplant list or have unstable angina.
·          Not have had a heart attack, open heart surgery, pacemaker/ICD implantation, angioplasty/stent or valvuloplasty within the past six weeks.

To learn more or be part of the Dance For Life pilot program, contact Teree Rice, R.N., heart failure coordinator, at 330-580-4764.

According to a report published on the American Heart Association's (AHA) Web site, researchers at the 2006 AHA Scientific Sessions found that "dancing improves ability to function and quality of life among chronic heart failure patients and may be a good alternative to other aerobic exercises."
