Mercy Medical Center's team of eight employees won ArtsinStark's first annual Genius Awards, a unique competition designed to highlight innovation in Stark County and connect the arts and the sciences together. A total of 13 teams from area businesses – including Diebold, The Timken Company, Day Ketterer, KeyBank and others – participated in the contest.

Mercy received the Genius Traveling Trophy during the project showcase and awards banquet, held yesterday at the Cultural Center for the Arts in Canton. Team members (pictured with Tom Cecconi, Mercy president and CEO) included (back row, left to right) Mike Schott, media center specialist; Trevor Clere, director of IT; Daiva Gerbec, mission outreach; Patti Breshnahan, administrative director of human resources; Andrew Brickley, director of sales; Cullen Hardman, marketing representative; (front row) Mandy Geiser, RN, nursing administration; and Kathy Wise, director of wellness.

Ten weeks prior to the event, each team received a "genius" box, along with a challenge: to assemble a remote-controlled robot capable of spinning, climbing a ramp, circling a tower, completing an obstacle course and more. In addition, each team was required to create a video using only a cell phone.

Tom Cecconi, Mercy president and CEO, attended the awards event and watched Mercy's team members put their robot to the test in front of the judges.

He says, "I was impressed by the creativity of our team, and I congratulate them on a job well done. They epitomize the many imaginative problem solvers we have at Mercy and throughout our community. I also applaud ArtsinStark for establishing the Genius Awards. It's a resourceful way to promote the exceptional talent we possess in Stark County."

The Genius Awards is part of the ArtsinStark 20/20 Vision, a five-year plan for raising the innovation level of Stark County and to position it as one of the 10 most innovative places of its size in America.
