Mercy Service League’s Souper Bowl Scores BIG WIN For Mercy Dental Services
Mercy Service League scored another BIG WIN for Mercy Dental Services & General Practice Dental Residency Endowment at Sunday evening’s inaugural Souper Bowl event at Mercy Health Center Jackson in Massillon. The Souper Bowl attracted more than 150 “players” and raised more than $6,700 for Mercy Dental Services.
Mercy MVPs (celebrity judges) included Maureen Ater, General Manager at the Massillon Independent; Thomas E. Cecconi; President & CEO of Mercy Medical Center and John Olihan; Chef for Mercy Medical Center/Metz Culinary Services. Mercy Service League owes this BIG WIN to head coach (event chair) Wendy Lichtenwalter and her team of dedicated committee members.
“The Souper Bowl was the result of some excellent teamwork by Mercy Service League; all of our guests had time to enjoy a variety of delicious soups and to get to know a few new restaurants,” stated Lichtenwalter, “We are grateful for the support of these local businesses and all of those who came out to support our financial pledge to the dental services that Mercy Medical Center provides in our community.”
Attendees enjoyed soup samplings from a variety of local establishments, including Basil Asian Bistro, Bella Sera Pizzeria & Ristorante, Brookside Country Club, The Canton Club Event Center, Fishers Catering Company, Gregory’s Family Restaurant, Kozmo’s, Smiley’s Ristorante & Pizzeria and Zoup! The Fresh Soup Company. Fresh bread was provided by Einstein Bros Bagels and desserts were prepared by the culinary art students at Canton South High School and R. G. Drage Career Technical Center.
The competition during this year’s Souper Bowl was fierce, as these local restaurants competed for top honors – as the game clock ticked down, only two took home the highly coveted silver ladle. Basil Asian Bistro earned the Judge’s Award with its Hot & Sour soup and Bella Serra Ristorante & Pizzeria took home the People’s Choice Award for its Tortellini soup.
Top honors in the dessert category were captured by the culinary students at Canton South – South Stark Career Academy, who received the Judge’s Award with their Napoleons, and R.G. Drage Career & Technical School, who captured the People’s Choice Award with their Bread Pudding with sauces.
The 2014 Souper Bowl was wildly successful, and, according to Lichtenwalter, is sure to become an annual event, “We scored a touchdown and we can't wait to do it again next year!”
All proceeds from this event benefit Mercy Dental Services & General Practice Dental Residency Endowment for Mercy Medical Center.
