How Real White Blood Cells Work
Whenever a germ or infection enters the body, the white blood cells snap to attention and race toward the scene of the crime. The white blood cells are continually on the lookout for signs of disease. When a germ does appear, the white blood cells have a variety of ways by which they
can attack. Some will produce protective antibodies that will overpower the germ. Others will surround and devour the bacteria.
The white blood cells have a rather short life cycle (sorry Willy), living from a few days to a few weeks. A drop of blood can contain anywhere from 7 000 to
25 000 white blood cells at a time. If an invading infection fights back and persists, that number will significantly increase.
A consistently high number of white blood cells is a symptom of Leukemia, a cancer of the blood. A Leukemia patient may have as many as
50 000 white blood cells in a single drop of blood.

Ben's Game
Ben Duskin is a boy who loves his video games; they help him cope with the grueling chemotherapy that he has to endure for his leukemia. The Make-A-Wish Foundation specializes in helping kids just like Ben make their wishes come true. Eric Johnston and his employer LucasArts granted Ben's wish of designing a video game for kids to cope with chemotherapy.
The object of Ben's video game is to destroy all mutated cells and to collect the seven shields that provide protection from common side effects of chemotherapy. The shields are guarded by "monsters" resembling colds, chicken pox, fever and hair loss-each a side effect of chemotherapy. Once you collect each of the seven shields, you win the game and the battle against the side effects of chemotherapy.
The Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation® is a charitable non-profit organization whose purpose is to fulfill magical wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. Now the sixth largest chapter nationwide, the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted over 2,800 wishes as of 2002.
