Canton, Ohio: Mercy Cancer Center recently installed a new Varian Medical Systems TrueBeam Linear Accelerator, a “super” accelerator designed toTrueBeam Linear Accelerator at Mercy in Canton Ohio advance the treatment of lung, breast, prostate, head and neck and many other cancers.

TrueBeam performs many advanced forms of radiotherapy. It can customize the amount of radiation that is sent to different parts of tumors using a state-of-the-art imaging system to visualize and verify the exact position of the tumor and treat it precisely. More than 100,000 data points are monitored continually as a treatment progresses.

“With the TrueBeam and our advanced TomoTherapy® machine, Mercy Cancer Center now offers unprecedented state-of-the-art radiation therapy treatments close to home for individuals facing a cancer diagnosis,” says Edward Walsh, MD, medical director of Mercy Cancer Center.

TrueBeam is also finely engineered to be fast, with most treatments taking just minutes a day. In fact, even tumors that move – such as those in the lungs – can be pinpointed thanks to special tools that compensate for motion during a treatment. This makes it possible to offer greater patient comfort by shortening treatments, and to improve precision by leaving less time for tumor motion during dose delivery.

Tom Cecconi, Mercy president and CEO, says the hospital invested in TrueBeam because it saves lives and quality of life. “TrueBeam has proven itself to be a cancer treatment that benefits patients in many ways,” he says. “It complements Mercy’s mission of quality, compassionate, affordable and accessible care, and it reflects our ongoing efforts to bring cutting-edge technology to Stark and surrounding counties.”
