Family Education

The birth of a child is unquestionably one of life’s true miracles. While many have tried to put the experience in words, few are capable of describing the sheer joy, which comes from bringing a new life into the world. We understand the uniquely personal nature of childbirth and are dedicated to making sure your birth experience is everything you want it to be – both before and after the arrival of your new baby. Prepared Childbirth Class

This four-week course will cover a different subject each week. Expectant parents will learn the choices of anesthesia, medication, relaxation techniques and exercises to strengthen the muscles used to birth a baby. A tour of Mercy Maternity Services is included.

Weekend Childbirth Classes

Mercy also offers a two-day(Saturday and Sunday) course every other month. The class is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cesarean Birth Class

Mercy Medical Center offers a cesarean birth class. Expecting parents can join a regular childbirth class during an evening where participants are learning about cesarean birth. Class is scheduled as needed.

Tike Hike

Children ages three to 10 are invited to this class to see a video on sibling rivalry and tour Mercy Maternity Services.

Breastfeeding Class

A breastfeeding class is offered once a month to teach expecting mothers the basics of breastfeeding. Once you deliver your baby, Mercy also offers a free, weekly breastfeeding support group. Led by a certified lactation consultant, the meetings offer weekly baby weight checks, discussion about breastfeeding challenges and support from other breastfeeding mothers.

Baby Basics

Baby Basics is offered every month. This one-time parenting class teaches many fundamentals of infant care and child rearing. Grandparents are welcome.

Infant And Child CPR

An infant and child CPR class is offered from 6 to 10 p.m. as needed. This class must be prepaid in order to send the study book to your home. Participants are expected to learn the information in the book and come to class prepared to be tested.

Maternity Services Tour

Each month Mercy offers a tour of Maternity Services. Guests have the opportunity to see the private rooms (labor and delivery), postpartum rooms, Neonatal Special Care Nursery, infant nursery and family waiting rooms.

Natural Family Planning

Natural Family Planning can be used to achieve or avoid a pregnancy without the use of drugs, devices or chemicals to alter the reproductive system. The United States Department of Health and Human Services and World Health Organization have both found that Natural Family Planning methods, when properly used, have a 98-99 percent effectiveness rate.
