Mercy Baby Showers Provide Canton Moms with Gifts, Childcare Education

Over the centuries and across many cultures, people have observed and honored the impending birth of a child. At modern-day baby showers, friends and family "shower" the mom-to-be with gifts for the newborn, as well as parenting wisdom and encouragement.

For several years, Mercy Mission Outreach has celebrated the joy and the responsibility of giving birth with women in Canton, Ohio, by sponsoring baby showers twice a year at Skyline Terrace housing complex in southeast Canton and at Mercy at St Paul Square in northeast Canton. Between 10 and 15 expecting or new moms join us once per week for three weeks for the full baby shower program, which includes gifts, lunch and education about newborn care – all at no cost to participants.

Each week, Mercy health care professionals and other community organizations share their knowledge and expertise about subjects such as labor and delivery, car seat safety, breastfeeding, nutrition, safe sleeping and much more. The women receive a helpful child-care book, a car seat, a baby rattle, bath thermometer, bibs, baby cereal, spoons, bowls and other gifts.

We recently held our spring 2014 baby showers, and here are some photos from the events:
