How to Keep Weight Off After a Significant Weight Loss

If you're one of the 108 million Americans on a diet or other weight-loss regimen and you've successfully lost all of your excess weight, congratulations! After working hard to accomplish this important goal, it is time to concentrate on part two:

Keeping the weight off for good!

As someone with more than 20 years experience working with OPTIFAST® and other medical weight management programs, I know the last thing you want to think about it gaining it all back. This is understandable, but the truth is that if you are not careful, all of your hard work may disappear and you can pretty easily gain back all of the lost weight—and then some.

Three Ways to Maintain Weight-loss Motivation and Endurance

Once you reach a certain weight it is easier for your body to stay there than to adjust to a lower, healthier weight. This means that even after losing between 50 and 100 pounds, you may still experience a lot of the same cravings for high-calorie foods that your body was accustomed to consuming before your weight loss.

Maintaining a healthy weight is not impossible; it just requires a good deal of motivation and endurance. Here are a few tips on how to keep weight off and remain healthy and happy for years to come.

  1. Don’t stop counting calories. Many of us count calories diligently when we are working towards our weight loss goal but stop paying so much attention once we reach the size we were hoping for. Once you get to a point that you want to maintain, eat the amount of calories it takes to maintain that weight without going over. In most cases, this means consuming about 2000 calories every day.
  2. Exercise daily. This is another aspect of dieting that seems to get lost after we reach our weight loss goals. If you spent an hour at the gym every day while you were losing weight and were successful, then keep up that same workout now that you are where you want to be. You made the time for physical fitness before, so keep it up!
  3. Stay positive. The worst thing you can do is realize that you are gaining weight and shrug it off like it isn’t happening. You worked very hard to lose the amount of weight that you did. Treat yourself right and stay positive about being healthy. The more discouraged you become, the more likely you are to begin gaining weight back.
