Behavioral Sciences - Adult PsychologyAt Mercy Medical Center, we understand that total health goes beyond physical well-being. For more than 100 years, Mercy has been dedicated to providing compassionate care for the whole person, which includes meeting the needs of body, mind and spirit. Mercy was the first psychiatric unit in the state of Ohio and the second in the nation when it opened in 1929..

If you or someone you love has been unable to enjoy an active life because of psychiatric or emotional needs (such as depression, anxiety, dementia, bipolar, psychosis or overwhelming stress), Mercy Behavioral Health can help.

Our behavioral health professionals – including board-certified psychiatrists and psycologists, registered nurses, occupational and recreational therapists, social workers and pastoral care staff members – provide a full range of individualized psychiatric services in a relaxing, healing environment.

Mercy Behavioral Health offers:

  • Psychiatric Assessment and Testing
Accredited by the Ohio Department of Mental Health, Mercy Behavioral Health provides comprehensive psychiatric diagnostic and medical evaluations; psychologcial testing; medication and social service assessments; and referrals and consultations for the adult and geriatric population.
  • Emergency Psychiatric Evaluations
A specially trained psychiatric triage nurse provides comprehensive emergency evaluations of patients who may be experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties. Available from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., the triage nurse can also provide admission and referral information. To access this service, call (330) 489-1111, ext. 5384 (11 a.m. to 11 p.m.) or (330) 489-1041.
  • Inpatient psychiatric treatment
In behavioral health, we focus on intensive, short-term psychiatric assessment, stabilization and treatment. Our program includes patient education groups, individual and family therapy, goal-directed one-to-ones, medication education and discharge planning. Our interdisciplinary approach helps return individuals to the highest level of independence and productivity possible. The length of stay is tailored to patient needs.
  • Occupational and Recreational Therapy
Part of Mercy’s interdisciplinary approach, occupational therapy (OT) helps individuals better perform activities of daily living. Through group and one-to-one therapy, OT promotes recovery, wellness and optimal independence.
Treatment focuses on stress, anger and illness management, relaxation methods, self-expression, exercise and individual needs. Recreation therapy helps individuals explore social and leisure activities that relieve stress and improve energy and motivation. Therapists incorporate music, games, the arts, pet therapy and social events.
  • Social Services
Licensed social workers provide assessment, a complete psychosocial history and address any identified psychosocial needs. The social worker is also a very important resource person for referrals to community agencies and support groups. An after-care plan is developed by your social worker with the participation of the patient and family which includes follow-up recommendations for treatment.
  • Community Connections
We understand the importance of support and encouragement following discharge. That’s why Behavioral Health helps individuals get connected with appropriate community services that can best facilitate their continued healing.

Specialized Behavioral Program

Mercy Behavioral Health also provides specialized programs that serve particular behavioral needs in the community, including:

  • Mercy CONCERN Employee Assistance Program
Mercy CONCERN offers confidential counseling services, consultation and training for work organizations and their employees. CONCERN helps companies address productivity issues and also assists employees in identifying and resolving personal and/or work-related problems that can affect quality of life.
